Book Birthday: The Grave Winner by Lindsey R. Loucks

Happy book birthday to The Grave Winner, a YA paranormal/fantasy romance, by Lindsey R. Loucks!

To celebrate, let’s have a massive giveaway! See below for details, but first, here are the book’s details.

Leigh Baxton is terrified her mom will come back from the dead -- just like the prom queen did.
While the town goes beehive over the news, Leigh bikes to the local cemetery and buries some of her mom’s things in her grave to keep her there. When the hot and mysterious caretaker warns her not to give gifts to the dead, Leigh cranks up her punk music and keeps digging.
She should have listened.
Two dead sorceresses evicted the prom queen from her grave to bury someone who offered certain gifts. Bury them alive, that is, then resurrect them to create a trio of undead powerful enough to free the darkest sorceress ever from her prison inside the earth.
With help from the caretaker and the dead prom queen, Leigh must find out what’s so special about the gifts she gave, and why the sorceresses are stalking her and her little sister. If she doesn’t, she’ll either lose another loved one or have to give the ultimate gift to the dead – herself.

 Alright, Taria, take it away!!

As a cover artist/cover photographer people usually ask me three questions. I usually laugh or joke off the answers because well I don’t like talking about myself but tis the season to be sharing and so I will answer these questions for you.

1. What’s it like to photograph sexy images of models for The Reed Files stock site?

I keep things in the studio very light on shoot day. Even though my models are in sexy, erotic, passionate positions, they are usually only three clicks away from busting out in laughter. We joke, we shoot silly videos, we dance, we take silly pics, shoot day is one big ball of fun.

2.      What is your favorite cover that you designed?

Hmmmm I honestly can’t really answer this. I love all of my covers but for different reasons. Here are a few of my favorites and why.

Taker of Life by F.L. Bicknell

This was the first cover where I photographed the models as well as did the design. It started off with a very bad drawing and when I showed the models what I wanted they flat out laughed at me. Once they got to my studio and into costumes they weren’t laughing as hard. But once I got the shot, I KNEW I hit the jackpot. I got exactly what I wanted and It was such an amazing feeling. When the art work was done I was beyond proud of myself. I was not only a new cover artist, I was a cover photographer too.
January Black by Wendy S. Russo

This was one of the first covers I had to design that needed to rely on mood and not a person. There are so many layers that creates that awesomely spooky gate scene and I was so proud of how it turned out. It gives off that drama and spookiness but at the same time invites you in to explore what’s beyond the gate.

Dakota Captive by Alythia Brown

ok seriously, look at this cover it’s gorgeous. I got free reign to do whatever I wanted and I fell in love with the outcome. I finally got to do a cover with a pretty girl in a beautiful dress. A dress whose train I constructed from scratch by the way…lol. I’d love it if I had a dress like that in my studio but it took me about 2hrs to digitally put that together. Again I took the photograph of the young lady for this cover so it is very special to me.

 Council Courtship by Constance Phillips

Again another one of my stock photos but that’s only one reason why I like it. I can see the desire and passion in this cover. How often does one get to create a scene from inside fairy land with sparkling sexy passionate fairies? HAWT!

3.     Do you nail your covers on the first try?

Oh goodness no. I wish it were that easy. Most times my concepts are accepted with some tweaks and then there are those occasions where I have to step back and rethink what I want and what will sell the book and start from scratch. For example the cover you know and love for A Stiff Kiss by Avery Olive was not the first option I gave the publisher. My first attempt was deemed too dark so I kept the dark mood but gave it a less menacing feel and we hit the jackpot with the new cover.

Thanks so much Taria for stopping by! To learn more about Taria's work, click the links below. Remeber, she's a photographer, a cover artist, a custom stock image creator, a mother, a husband... And much, much more!

Death is her destiny. But she has other things in mind.
Lia Starr's life isn't a fairytale. It's a reality overflowing with scary monsters, death, and betrayal--a past she left behind when she entered her new foster home. Now, with a loving family, a sister she's always craved, and relief from the gruesome corpses that tormented her as a child, she's finally content. Until a freak accident changes everything.
The monsters are back, and their mission is simple: drag Lia straight to their murky hell. When Aiden, an apparition, appears to Lia, she has hope once again. Because Aiden can cross the veil between the spirit world and the earthly dimension, physically fighting off the monsters sending them back. With Aiden's determination to keep her safe and his absorbing blue eyes, Lia can't help falling in love with him. But who is he, and what does he really want? As Lia and Aiden's relationship deepens, so does the mystery surrounding him.
Once Lia finds out Aiden has traded his soul to save her, she enters the darker dimension, a dimension where nightmares are reality, ready to kick some butt. But surrounded by twenty-eight mutilated monsters and a deranged cult leader intent on bringing his dark world to the surface, Isn't what Lia expects. And even worse, she must face her traumatic past in order to destroy them. If she fails, not only will she lose the guy she loves and face certain death, but she will also risk one thing she can't afford to lose: her eternal soul

What Do You Get a Mermaid for Christmas?

Hey there and Happy Holiday Season! I’m Katie O’Sullivan, author of the YA paranormal romance, SON OF A MERMAID. I’m taking over Avery’s blog today to talk about Christmas-y stuff and gift giving. Especially for those hard-to-buy-for friends.

I live on Cape Cod, and tend to let the ocean influence my Holiday decorating and gift buying. As an author who writes about mermaids, I tend to gravitate toward, you know, mermaid-inspired wall art, decorations and ornaments. Cape Cod is a great place to find mermaid ornaments for the tree...

I collect them from around the world as well. I bought a few of these when we were in Mexico last year at Christmas time…

A friend of mine just came back from Florida with a “local” mermaid from Miami for my Christmas tree…

I also have lots of starfish and shell ornaments, as well as mermaid ornaments we made with my daughter’s Girl Scout troop a few years back…luckily, my daughter gave me a few for Christmas!

So, for the mermaid-lover on your list, there are lots of fun choices. But what do you buy for your friend who’s, you know, a *real* mermaid? That gets a bit tricker, since life underwater is played by a whole different set of rules.

First of all, mermaids celebrate the Winter Solstice instead of Christmas. And electric Christmas lights don’t work too well underwater. Anything made with paper or glue is right out as well – imagine how quickly a pile of gift wrapped boxes would turn into a soggy mess underwater! Mermaids tend to wrap packages with sheets of seaweed and twine instead of paper and tape for those reasons.

But mermaids do love receiving gifts, and anything shiny is always appreciated! Think of Disney’s Ariel and how she had a room filled with shiny objects that she’d collected. To make a big impression, jewelry is always a good choice, but remember it’s going to be worn in saltwater, so either choose real silver or gold, or go simple with leather cords.

In my upcoming sequel to SON OF A MERMAID, the main character, Shea MacNamara, takes my advice about jewelry and gives a shiny bracelet to his mermaid girl friend. As a special Holiday treat, I’ve included an excerpt from that scene! The sequel, BLOOD OF A MERMAID, will be released in Spring 2014 from Crescent Moon Press, but until then, enjoy this taste.

And Happy Holidays!

Excerpt from BLOOD OF A MERMAID, by Katie O’Sullivan

“I got something for you.” He dug into his pocket and pulled out a small box, carefully wrapped in shiny blue paper with raffia string. “I saw it in Hyannis the other day when I was walking on Main Street with John and Hailey. I thought of you.”

Kae stared at the package in Shea’s hand, but didn’t reach for the gift. “Oh, it’s pretty. And so shiny blue! Like the ocean’s surface on a sunny day. But Shea, I don’t think paper will last very long underwater.”

Shea’s face cracked into a wide grin. “That’s just the wrapping, silly.” He placed the box in her hand. “You need to look inside for the gift.”

“I’ve never heard of wrapping paper,” Kae turned the box slowly around in her hands, the shine of the paper reflecting the light. “It’s so pretty.”

“You’re supposed to rip it off,” Shea explained, shaking his head. Sometimes he forgot that they came from such different worlds. He showed her how to slide the bow off, and then tore the edge of the paper to get her started.

It was a small package, and the paper came off fairly quickly once she started to rip it. She stared at the white box. “Oh, it’s lovely. But Shea, cardboard is not much better than paper…”

He interrupted. “The box isn’t the present.”

She looked up at him, cocking her head to the side. “Then why did you give it to me? Why give me shiny paper to rip and a box that isn’t a present? I don’t understand.”

He shifted his weight uncomfortably, feeling slightly foolish. “I don’t know. It’s how we give gifts.” He smiled again. “Just open the box already.”

Inside was a cuff bracelet of hammered silver, made of five thin distinct strands that rippled across like waves, looking like the undulating surface of the ocean. Kae stared, not saying anything.

“I saw it and thought of you, leaving on your journey,” Shea stammered, unsure how to gauge her reaction. “You know, the five lines of silver flowing like water, like the five oceans…” His voice trailed off. “You don’t like it?”

“It’s beautiful,” she whispered, her eyes looking watery.

“It’s just a bracelet.” He reached over to take it out of the box. “Let’s see if it fits okay.” He slipped the cuff over her wrist and gently squeezed so that it closed snugly against her skin. He trailed his fingers up to her elbow and leaned his forehead against hers. “It’s so you don’t forget me while we’re apart.”

“Oh, Shea…” Her voice was still a mere whisper. “I won’t forget you.”

16 Days of Christmas Giveaways: My Favorite Holiday Treats

Avery, thanks so much for having me back for your Christmas giveaway event! It’s always so much fun. This year I want to share some of my favorite holiday treats with your readers. I am not much of a cook, but I do love baking, especially this time of year. Years ago, back when my friends and I had a lot more free time than we do now, we’d exchange gifts that included a number of yummy treats and usually a bottle of my friend’s wonderful homemade Gluehwein, which is a kind of German mulled wine.  Now with kids and jobs we are lucky to get cards and gifts out on time! I still try to find time to do a little baking, though.

I’m going to share two recipes today. One is for Gluehwein, which will always be a traditional holiday beverage for me. We used to make it for New Year’s Eve and the production of it was half the fun. The other recipe is for apple bread, which is still a staple of my Christmas gifts. I started baking it because when I lived in Massachusetts we’d go apple picking every fall and I’d come home with a huge bag of apples. Apple bread freezes nicely and it’s so delicious. Enjoy!

Gluehwein

(Recipe from food.com, as the only recipe I have doesn’t have any measurements. We did it all to taste. I believe traditionally you would add a high proof rum at the end and light the drink on fire.)

Ingredients:

3/4 cup water ( or orange juice)
3/4 cup white sugar ( or less to taste)
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange
10 whole cloves
1 (750 ml) bottles red wine

Directions:

1.  In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer.
2.  Cut the orange in half, and squeeze the juice into the simmering water. Push the cloves into the outside of the orange peel, and place peel in the simmering water. Continue simmering for 30 minutes, until thick and syrupy.
3.  Pour in the wine, and heat until steaming but not simmering. Remove the clove-studded orange halves.

Serve hot in mugs or glasses that have been preheated in warm water (cold glasses will break.).

Apple Bread
Makes two loaves

 5 apples, sliced
½ C sugar
Toss the apples and sugar and let sit while you make the batter.

In a large bowl, combine:
3 C flour
2 C sugar
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
1/3 C orange juice
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt
4 eggs
1 C vegetable oil

Blend on low for 1 minute and on medium for 4 minutes.
Grease 2 pans and layer in each 3 batter and 2 apple.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour, 5 minutes.

Okay, those sound like amazing Holiday Treats. I've totally written them down to try! Now, let's learn about more about Thief of Hope!

Sydney, a street urchin and pickpocket in the town of Last Hope, has managed to evade the oppressive Guild for years, but there is no escaping fate when she's sentenced to death for associating with the resistance.

After she's rescued by a wizard, Sydney is forced to accept that magic—long outlawed throughout the Kingdom of Thanumor—still exists, and the Tuatha, a powerful faery folk, are much more than ancient myth and legend. When the wizard offers a chance to fight the Guild and bring Willem, bastard prince and champion of the Tuatha, to the throne, Sydney embraces the cause as a way to find her own redemption.

But Sydney's fear of the Guild, distrust of authority, and surprising connection to the Tuatha threaten Willem's success. Can she untangle the strange threads that entwine her life not only to the fate of the kingdom, but also to Willem himself?

And now for a little more on Cindy! If you want to learn even more about her and books, click on the links below.

Cindy Young-Turner has been writing for most of her life. At age twelve, she won her first writing contest, a local contest in her small hometown in Massachusetts calling for stories written in the style of Edgar Allan Poe. Thus began her love of stories that are dark and fantastical. She believes genre fiction can be just as well written and valuable as literature. The universal themes of love, hate, revenge, and redemption are present regardless of whether characters live in the distant future, on other planets, or in fantastical realms.
By day she edits and does business development for international development projects. In her free time, she works on inspiring her characters to fight for change and justice in their imaginary worlds. Her published works include the fantasy novel Thief of Hope and a short prequel, Journey to Hope.
