Thank
you, Avery, for inviting me back this year!
When I first conceived
writing All That’s Unspoken, I wanted
to write a story about second chances and misconceived notions. Christmas and
New Year’s is the time of year that I – and many other people – reflect upon
the past and plan ahead. We set resolutions and promise ourselves to break bad
habits. It seemed like the perfect time of year for this story. Now, my muse loves music. All of the books I’ve written have a playlist: Songs that remind me of the plot line and songs that I imagine being on my characters iPods during the time that the story takes place.
This book was no exception.
Even though it is a holiday story, some of the songs on that playlist aren’t holiday music. Here is a short selection of those “everyday songs.”
Non-Christmas
·
“Life in a Northern Town” – The Dream
Academy
·
“If You’re Gone” – Matchbox
Twenty
·
“Gone, Gone, Gone” – Phillip
Phillips
·
“Ho, Hey” – The
Lumineers
I’ve set this story in a
small town that is very familiar to me; life in a small, northern town is familiar
to me. The Dream Academy song reminded me of the feel I wanted for this book. A
sense of community, a very small world to contain the tale.
The Matchbox Twenty
song, “If You’re Gone” is one that my hero – Nate – holds dear. He’s been
burned by the heroine’s need for bright city lights and has a hard time
trusting her now. Phillips Phillips’ song is Hailey’s answer to Nate’s concern.
The core message of the Lumineers’ song – I belong with you, you belong with me
– is a sentiment that seemed to fit this couple.

But,
All That’s Unspoken is more about
that mental prep for a New Year then it is about the Christmas holiday, and
it’s about two people who were once a couple finding each other again.
So,
a playlist for this book wouldn’t be complete without:
After eight years, Hailey is back in Caseville Michigan.
Just months after her mother’s death, her siblings want to put their father in
a nursing home and rent out the family farm. If that wasn’t enough, the
prospective tenant is Nate, the high school crush she left behind the day after
they acted on their mutual attraction.
After high school, Nate Jenkins planned to leave small town
behind, but life dealt him a different hand of cards to play. He’s now back in
Caseville, raising his daughter, and running his family’s diner. His daughter’s
speech disorder has been improved by therapeutic horse riding and if he can
lease the old Lambert farm, he can get her a horse of her own. The only
standing in the way is Hailey, the same woman who left him eight years ago
without even saying goodbye.
Can they get over all that’s unspoken between them?
Constance Phillips
lives in Ohio with her husband, daughter, and four canine kids. Her son, now on
his own, is planning a wedding, reconfirming that romance still lives and
breathes.
When not writing stories of finding and rediscovering love, Constance and her husband spend the hours planning a cross-country motorcycle trip for the not-so-distant future…if they can find a sidecar big enough for the pups.
Fairyproof and Resurrecting Harry are available now through Crescent Moon Press. The Novella sequel to Fairyproof, Council Courtship is also out now. Look for her first Contemporary Romance, All That’s Unspoken, will be released Dec. 15, 2013 by Turquoise Morning Press. The Ultimate Catch will be released in 2014 from Whiskey Creek Press.
