So, I know I’ve been a little quiet this past week, I assure it’s not because I don’t love all you blog followers, it’s simply because I’ve been working hard and going through the finalish version of A Stiff Kiss! It’s getting very close!
Alright, here is the first book review of the New Year!
I’ve always been fond of Cassandra Clare and her Mortal Instruments series. But then she introduced the Infernal Devices Series, new characters (some old) a steampunkish environment with Shadowhunters centered in London.
Last year I picked up the first in the series of three books, this year I asked for Clockwork Prince for Christmas.
I devoured this book in two days, it takes up where Clockwork Angel left off and quickly get’s into the action, the romance and tension.
In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa's powers for his own dark ends.
With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister's war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move and that one of their own has betrayed them.
Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will; the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?
As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.—Quoted from Goodreads.com
Tessa is a Downworlder, but she’s also so much more than that, with an ability that’s unique, no Warlock mark, and Shadowhunters desperate to keep her safe, she finds her life always in Danger.
Will to me is very, very similar to that of Jace from the Mortal Instruments Series, with angelically perfect good looks, broody exterior and well, constantly playing hard to get. But he has a secret, a reason for his selfish, push people away personality, which is revealed in this novel.
And let’s not forget Jem, his character just breaks my heart, he is the perfect gentleman, kind, caring and of course, even though he is ill, and fighting for his life he’s described in such a way it has you swooning right from the start.
So, we have two guys and one girl as the main front and center characters. You know what that means right? Can we say, Love Triangle.
But, this novel isn’t just about romance, it’s also got the same action, mystery and tension as the one before it, and what we’ve come to expect from Cassandra Clare.
This novel really puts things into perspective, we learn even more about the Shadowhunters, the deceit that can happen, the games people play to get what they want and of course, we learn a little bit about love.
For me, these novels have always had a bit of everything. They can please even the pickiest of readers. And, proof of that fact is that Mr. Olive enjoyed the series just as much as I did.
So, if you like romance (or romantic tension that has you at the edge of your seat) action, fighting, betrayal and well everything, this novel (and the ones before it) is for you.
I know this isn’t your typical book review, and I say that because there are just so many secrets, I fear delving right in would spoil the novel, and the series for anyone who hasn’t yet read them. So I’ve decided to keep this short and sweet, giving this novel, Clockwork Prince, two very enthusiastic thumbs up!
