Burn hot and cold.

Read minds.

Disappear at will.

Dream your own death.

Welcome to Sparkstone University, where some students are more gifted than others.

When Ingrid learns she's been accepted at the hyper-secretive Sparkstone University, she is skeptical. It's an honour to attend, apparently, and yet barely anyone has ever heard of the place.

And everyone seems a little too happy that she's there: especially when she meets Sunny and her group of friends They seem to already know Ingrid. As if she was expected. Expected to save the Earth from imminent alien invasion. Like she has superpowers or something.

As if magic and mutations exist. As if aliens are really planning to attach.

That just sounds ridiculous There's no such thing.

...right?

Wrong.

A silence descends between the two of us as I search for something appropriate to say. She gives me a half-grin. “I’m blabberin’ away. I don’t blame you for thinkin’ I’m crazy, really.” She steals a glance at the camera again. “I just . . . I just think that there might be a time when I’m not gonna go home. And then Mama really will be alone.” Reaching out, she squeezes my left hand. “Don’t you let them make you think that you’re alone. ’Cause you’re not, y’hear?”

My mouth is dry. “Okay.”

“Don’t let them scare you. Don’t show them that you’re scared. I’ve . . . I’ve seen things . . .” She’s whispering now. “And I know how some of it’s going to play out. Just . . . just promise me, whatever happens . . .” Tears line her eyes.

I frown. “Promise what? Sunni, why are you crying?”

She leans even closer to my ear. “I can see things . . . that haven’t happened yet. In my dreams.” Her voice is a trembling whisper.

There’s a black thud in my stomach. “That’s how you knew I was coming.”

“Yes.”

“What . . . what else did you see about me?”

Hidden sorrow and the stories that accompany it threatens to spill from her eyes. “Some of it I don’t understand. But you’re not here by accident. They want you here. And so do we. You can help us. But listen carefully. You can’t help me. I am already lost. Do y’hear?”

I sit in stunned silence. My heart is drumming up a storm and there’s a high-pitched ringing in my ears. “Sunni, why can’t I help you?”

She pulls her hand away from mine and gets up from the armchair. “Knowin’ everyone’s secrets, it’s a terrible burden. If they get a hold of me, it’s all over. So don’t think about me. I know you’ll do the right thing. Make the right choice, and all.” Sniffling, she wipes her tears away with the back of her hand. “I’m just gonna go pee. You’ll be all right here?”

“Uh, yeah,” I say.

She disappears into the bathroom and shuts the door, and I take a moment to process everything Sunni has just said. Don’t let them scare you. Promise me . . . Promise her what? That I won’t tell anyone about Misty shooting fire and ice from her bare hands? Who would believe me, anyway?

Here is a bit more behind the Clare C. Marshall:
