Book Review: Pyxis by K.C. Neal

I discovered Pyxis by KC Neal by chance. It was funny. I received a rather peculiar e-mail one day stating that I had signed up to read and review the novel for its forthcoming release. I stared at my computer a little dumbfounded, I had to think back really hard. When I came up with the idea that, no, I never did sign up, I couldn’t help but check out the link to KC’s website anyways.

And what I found was the interesting blurb for Pyxis and a cover that was beautiful and eye catching. So, I e-mailed back, explained that I didn’t sign up to read and review the novel, however that I’d love to jump at the chance anyways. The novel sounded intriguing so what did I have to lose?

Pyxis: The discovery is the first in a series, and the debut novel of KC Neal. It will be released November 4th in Ebook form and December 2nd in Paperback. Two worlds... one 16-year-old girl must learn to protect them both.

The nightmares haunting Corinne and her friend Mason hint at a universe that exists beyond the one they know. Her destiny is to protect a weakness between the two worlds, but her mentor is dead. As Corinne and Mason search for answers, she tries to ignore the sparks igniting between them, but can't deny she feels safe only when he's nearby. Will they find help before their nightmares break free? -- Quoted from Goodreads

Strange things happen to Corinne after she bakes delicious Petit Fours for a school bake sale. She unknowingly put secret potions into the little morsels of goodness and that for her is the start of her journey. The potions came from a box called the Pyxis, she assumed they were food colours her Grandmother had used, but what she discovers is that the Pyxis is so much more than just a keepsake box with tiny vials of mystery potions.
Together with her friends Mason and Angela, Corinne must discover what the Pyxis really is and what it has to do with her and her friends. The problem is, the person that Corinne could always count on, and the one person that holds all the secrets to the Pyxis is Corrine’s Grandmother, and sadly she is dead.
The novel starts off showing us the wonderful friendship between Corrine and Angela. It sets the stage for how important friendship is, and how to hold onto it. And of course, Mason, the love interest is ready for action and his loyalties never falter, even when Corrine thinks it does. Together the three of them discover so much more than just their friendship and how it’s tested, but that they are apart of something even bigger then they could have ever imagined.
Ms. Neal has her characters written down to a fine art, they have great personalities, each very different, but adding so much to the novel. No Mary Sues in this book! Each one brings something to the table and help Corrine in her search for the truth. The supporting characters are just as intricate and a pleasure to get to know.
This novel is an excellent show of tension, romance and discovery. Ms. Neal did a wonderful job setting things up, giving a taste of the world beyond and how the Pyxis is the key to everything. It was a pleasure to read, and I’ll be back for more!
