Blog Tour and Guest Post: Becoming Bryn by Angela Carling

Hello and welcome to the Becoming Bryn Blog Tour! I was supposed to have a super fun guest post for y'all today, but Blogger has been giving me nothing but grief! Argh.

So, I hope you don't mind simply learning about Becoming Bryn, reading my review and for fun, entering the Giveaway for a SIGNED PAPERBACK COPY of BECOMING BRYN (International Giveaway)

First off, if you weren't around for the cover reveal, let me introduce to you the cover and blurb!

For months, Jesse has been envious of her twin sister Bryn and even has a crush on Bryn’s gorgeous, popular boyfriend, Quinton. When Jesse awakens from a coma to learn that everyone thinks she is Bryn, the option of actually taking over her sister’s life is beyond tempting, but there’s a downside. She’d have to give up Ethan, her best friend and the only person she trusts. Could she actually live as Bryn for the rest of her life? And if her family and friends found out, would they ever forgive her?

IF you want to rush out and by Becoming Bryn right this second, clink on the buy links :)

Now, let's get on with the review!

I will come right out and say that I am no stranger to Angela Carling's work! I've read UnbreakableLove, her debut (a totally sweet romance with a few twists) and Shackled (a book every girl should read, and understand that domestic violence, of any kind, is not okay) so naturally I jumped at the chance to pick up her latest release, Becoming Bryn.

The blurb definitely grabbed my attention. I don't want to give away spoilers but this is a very fun, slightly heart wrenching beach read. I devoured it in about a day, because staying true to form, Angela has written a very well rounded novel with great characters, prose and a lesson to be learned.

What's that saying, to truly understand someone, you have to walk a mile in their shoes, I think that's how it goes.  When Jesse has the opportunity to take over her sister Bryn's life, she goes for it, thinking that her sister Bryn, has it all. But we're quick to see that's not the case, and what Jesse has to give up might not truly be worth it.

With twists and turns (make sure you have some kleenex nearby) this novel, has it all. We get an in depth look at both sisters (through alternating POV's) which I think really makes this novel. It wouldn't have been the same without the addition of Bryn, her thoughts and her opinions. We truly got an inside look at the two sisters, allowing us to connect with them. I love the males in this book, they've added some swoon worthy moments. But this novel isn't just about blossoming romance, it's about growing up, making the right decisions and of course redemption.

If you're looking for a great read with dimension, not your typical 'fairy tale' take on switching places, and novel that will tug your heart, pick up Becoming Bryn!

Blog Tour and Book Review: Hidden Wings by Cameo Renae

I know, it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. I can apologize, or I can admit, that sometimes blogging is the furthest thing from my mind, but hey, at least when I do post, it’s always good, right?

Today I have a review of Hidden Wings by Cameo Renae along with a tour wide giveaway!

I was gracious enough to receive a copy as part of a blog tour in exchange for an honest review. First off, check out the cover and the back cover blurb!

Seventeen is a life changing age for Emma Wise.

As her family's sole survivor in a car crash, she is left with a broken arm and a few scrapes and bruises. But these are only outward marks; inside, her heart is broken and the pieces scattered.

Whisked away to Alaska, to an aunt she’s never met, Emma starts over. Secrets unveil themselves and now…she doesn't even know who or what she is.

A centuries old prophecy places Emma in the heart of danger. Creatures of horrifying and evil proportions are after her, and it will take Emma, her aunt, and six, gorgeously captivating Guardians to keep her safe. But, if she can survive until her eighteenth birthday... things will change.--Provided by Author

It’s not very often that I come across a book that touches me. I mean, really touches me. These days as an author myself and an avid reader, maybe my expectations are higher, maybe I’m just growing harder to please, or maybe I’m reading the wrong books. Either way, when a book causes me to literally stop breathing, well, it’s the sign of a good read.

I didn’t know what to expect when coming into Hidden Wings. I’m not going to lie, the premise didn’t thrill me. It sounded like so many other books I’ve read over the last few years. I sort of rolled my eyes and thought, what are the chances this one is going to be any different?

I was pleasantly surprised. Right away you are thrown into an impossible situation. Emma is the sole survivor of a devastating accident that has taken the life of everyone she holds dear. We see real, honest to god emotion from the character. I felt for the character, the situation and the emotion that was written on the page. Not only is the writing great, but the character development is exsquisit. The description and scenery paints a picture that played so real in my mind, I often did feel like I was in the middle of a movie theatre, rather than clutching my Kindle, hungry for more.

My only complaint is that the novel takes place over the course of only a few days. Though the page-gripping writing pulled me into the story, I wished, for a first book in the series, for just a little bit more. A times the plot seemed to move at hyper speed when I wanted to slow things down and really, truly enjoy what was happening. I expect so much more to come from future books in this series and hope that they all don’t move at lightning speed.

However, this is one well rounded novel! Over the short, starting out journey of the novel you can be sure to experience pain and sorrow, but you can also laugh out loud (there is certainly some humour within the pages) but most of all, like any good book, you can experience love.

Since I don’t like spoilers, and I do my best not to give too much away, I’ll stop here. Hidden Wings is an amazing novel, the series has so much potential and the writing is nearly flawless. I would recommend this novel to any YA reader who wants a taste of everything wrapped up in a fast-paced novel that only begins to breach the world that Cameo wants us all to experience and the characters she wants us to love.

The task?
Like Read 2 Review on Facebook!

Please welcome, Kate!

1. You are wonder woman! You run a blog, a newsletter, a blog tour events company and have twitter and Facebook! How do you find the time to manage all of those endeavours?
I’ve managed to get it sorted so I am online constantly working for 2 - 4 hours per day. It’s not too bad, lol!!! I pre-schedule Read 2 Review if I can so then it’s just updating the other sites (of which I have 4 lol) and working behind the scenes.

2. Tell us a little about your blog tour company.
Page Turner Book Tours was set up earlier this year and has taken 4 tours so far. Each tour offers different special items depending on the cost. We have made the packages very creative too by adding in homemade items, recipes and much more. Our tours have been well received and we hope to plan more through the coming year.

3. If you realized that you were only going to be able to read and review 2 books for the rest of your life which would you choose and why?
Gosh that’s hard. I would have to go with the books that I have revisited ever since I was a little girl. The Chronicles Of Narnia and Lord Of The Rings. I have lost count of how many times I have read these books I adore them.

4. You've gotten to know a lot of great authors over the last year or two, but there must be an author you really want to meet in person, who is it and why?
This would have to be my dear friend Marian Lanouette. She’s a fantastic author, which is how we became friends. She has really been there for me recently with the issues I have faced. She has been through such a lot this year and even then she still checks in with me and asks how I am. I am so glad to have been privileged to meet her and hopefully one day I will be able to meet her.

5. What can we expect to see from Reader’s Shadow?
Each month, on the first of each month, the magazine will be released. Each issue will be an extension of Read 2 Review and offers interviews, guest posts, spotlights, book features and contests. We feature an author each month with their cover appearing on the front cover of the magazine. We hope that people like what we put together.

6. When you plan on curling up with a good book, what is the snack or treat that gets you into the reading mood?
Mmm that’s a hard one. I would have said Chocolate. However with being in the hospital recently and now facing an operation, I would have to say a slice of toast and marmite.

7. What is your favourite thing about being a book blogger? What do you wish your blog had more of?
I love finding new authors and working with them to help them promote their work. It gives me such satisfaction when I hear a book I have worked with is doing well. I just wish I had more time to read and offer more reviews.

8. And lastly, what can we expect to see from you and Read 2 Review in the coming New Year?
Well I recently started working with Great Minds Think Aloud and I will be working hard with the authors that I look after and hoping for great things for them.

Read 2 Review I hope will continue to grow and get bigger and bigger.

Hey am I allowed a shameless plug? If so then I would like to encourage anyone who is reading this to join us as a reader. We have a lot of books that, as I person I can’t get through myself. Blog Tour: Fate Fixed by Bonnie Erina Wheeler

Alright, today we are part of the Fate Fixed Blog Tour and Author Bonnie Erina Wheeler has cooked up a great guest post. But, of course, I’ve taken the time to read Fate Fixed and am happy to share my review with y’all. Oh, but wait! There’s a giveaway attached to this awesome post too!

So, let’s check out the cover and blurb for Fate Fixed by Bonnie Erina Wheeler!

When Lexie Anderson’s mother suddenly announces she is marrying a Romanian immigrant, Lexie willingly leaves behind her busy life in Connecticut for her penance in the "Moose Capital of the World.” Small town living is strange enough, now Lexie must cope with her overbearing stepfamily monitoring her every move. They disappear into the woods at night and keep a strange secret locked in their shed. Her once calm mother is now having violent outbursts and Lexie’s little sister is hearing sinister sounds coming from the forest behind their new home. Lexie’s biggest surprise comes when she discovers the boy she has been dreaming about since her accident is living in Maine. Despite Torin’s questionable reputation, Lexie cannot resist the physical and emotional attraction pulsating between them. Animals and people in town are turning up dead and Lexie learns the strange new world she lives in has real life monsters. Just when she decides she wants to be with Torin forever, she must fight to protect her mother and sister from being harmed by a formidable evil.—Supplied by the Author

I was given a copy of Fate Fixed in exchange for an honest review.

Right away I’m going to be honest and say that the cover didn’t do anything for me. I hate saying that. And I hate that I said much the same thing in the last review I did. Perhaps it’s just me, but I find that this cover is a little on the generic side—as so many are these days. There isn’t anything wow or attention grabbing about it L Sorry, Bonnie. I just think for the novel and its contents something much better could have been cooked up.

Now, I must say that the blurb did catch my attention. There’s a lot of interesting events that are mentioned that gave enough intrigue to want to read the novel. What I was lost on was the seemingly random mention of an accident involving Lexie. Nothing before that gave any hint that that would play an important role. It caught me off guard, however, in part it was good, I felt I really needed to know what that was all about.

I was not to keen about the opening of this novel. There was a lot of information thrown at us, all at once. Sort of a “hey, this is what’s been going on,” and it was a little too much too fast. It very much slowed down the pacing of the novel, especially when I thought it’d be laced with so much more. However, I pressed on, and didn’t let that take up too much of my opinion. And it was a good thing.

Though there were things in this novel that I didn’t like, sort of a “not my cup of tea situation” there were many aspects that drew me in.

Each and every character was well thought out, I loved something about everyone. Lexie is kind and considerate when it comes to her mother and sisters well being. Torin isn’t a one sided male lead, either. I think he had just as much to deal with giving him multiple sides to his personality.

The romance between Lexie and Torin, though at times seemed lightening in pace, was written excellently. Their story isn’t so unique, a take on destiny, yet it was written in such a way that it gave it a new twist.

And the mystery. There was lots of it when it came to Lexie’s new town, her new family and even Torin’s got a mysterious side.

Fate Fixed had many great things about it, and this review comes down to me, as a reader, not loving everything, but in no way is it a bad read. I think it will appeal to any paranormal romance lover out there. It’s got just enough action, romance, mystery all rolled into it that most will find it a pager-turning read.

I will be giving the sequel, Blood Twist, a chance, for sure.

Here’s the guest post that was graciously written for the blog, and I must say, it’s an excellent topic, one that I might steal the next time I need to write one! Thanks Bonnie!

“What do you think sets your book apart from other books in the same genre?”

I have always been a huge fan of paranormal romance. Throw in my fascination with vampires and werewolves and one can easily see why the idea for the Erris Coven Series came to mind. My love for these amazing creatures isn’t unique. Take a lovely stroll through the young adult section at your favorite bookstore and you will most likely see dozens of novels with this same mix. However, despite their similarity, I like to think Fate Fixed and its sequel Blood Twist have something a little different to offer the genre.

I am Irish. Not one hundred percent by all means, but a huge part of me is. I wanted to bring my love for Eire into the story by making some of my characters Ireland born and bred. But I had to ask myself, how were they made? I didn’t want to just follow the same Transylvanian vampire lore and legends so I created my own.

I knew that Ireland once had Viking invasions and when I researched Norse legends and discovered their belief in the draugar, I was hooked. I knew that I wanted to incorporate some of that into my own imaginary world.  I loved the idea of my half-vampires being completely different than anything I have ever read. Creating the history of their world was a fascinating journey. Once I discovered what they stood for, it was easy for me to envision how their choices would affect their lives.

After knowing who my protagonists were in the story, it was time to create the villains. I knew I wanted real bad guys. Bad guys that could make my heroines squirm in their shoes. In many books, the antagonist is a misunderstood soul who had been dealt a hard hand. Not for me! I wanted my heroes to have real challenges that would up the stakes and scare their pants off. As I write book 3 in the series now, Soul Kissed, I continue to challenge myself in this department.

Like many YA paranormal romances, my series may have true love, swoony heroes, and vampires and werewolves – but I like to think it will take my readers on a unique journey full of surprises, dark villains and an interesting spin on vampire and werewolf lore.

Blog Tour: Something of a Kind by Miranda Wheeler

Today I’m hosting debut novelist, Miranda Wheeler and Something of a Kind. Not only do I have a review, but also a great guest post that gives more insight into her novel! AND what blog tour stop would be complete without a giveaway, right? So, of course, somewhere in this post, you'll find the details to a great GIVEAWAY!

Firstly, let’s check out the cover and blurb.

As a 17-year-old artist, Alyson Glass had her future mapped – she’d go to art school, study in Paris, and eventually make enough bank to support her single mother. The trouble is, things don’t always go as planned – especially a sneak attack of stage-four ovarian cancer.

Suddenly motherless and court-ordered to move in with her estranged father, Aly’s forced to leave behind her New York hometown for the oddities of Alaska. Ashland seems like cruel and unusual punishment – at least until her dad ditches her at a local restaurant and she crashes into a super-hot, guitar-playing diner-boy with a horrific home life.

Noah Locklear is used to waiting – waiting for his shift to end, waiting until his drunkard parents go to bed, and waiting for the day he can get his sister away from their dysfunctional family. The summer before senior year, the elusive researchers that ruthlessly pry into Ashland’s history shatter a final cord with Noah’s abusive father, one of the town’s elders. Unfortunately, as far as his parents are concerned, the new girl who’s changing everything belongs to the outsiders. With their relationship increasingly forbidden, the struggle of knowing who to trust reveals that nothing is what it seems.

As Aly encourages Noah to investigate the legends he’d always written off as stories, they uncover the one thing their fathers can agree on: there’s something in the woods.—Supplied by Author

I received this book in exchange for an honest review as part of the Something of a Kind Blog Tour. And I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.

I’m very familiar with teen romance and coming of age stories. I worried that this novel would be so much like others but is a breath of fresh air with a storyline that grabs attention. However, I was not taken with the cover as much as I would have liked.

Right off we see Alyson, having to deal with the tremendous loss that comes with the death of a parent. I think Ms. Wheeler writes the emotion in such a way that one needs to grab a Kleenex, and hold onto it for the duration of the novel. Not only does she throw her character across the country to live with a stranger of a father, but we see even more. My heart tugged for Noah and his sister. His character was written with so much depth (and swoon) that he isn’t your typical novel heartthrob.

Both characters are conflicted, dealing with real life problems, that are very relatable to teens and adults alike. The novel has several plot points woven together to give a very heartfelt, entertaining read. Each character grew over the course of the novel, which is importan. They’ve learned to use their sadness and pain as way to channel strength and endurance when needed. By the end, I was a fan of both characters, the novel and the author.

I don’t like spoilers, so, I’ll leave the twist that will grab your attention even more, out of this review. That’s for the reader to discover and not for me to tell you.

Something of a Kind can easily appeal to any YA lover. There is truly a bit of everything in this novel! However, I will say that, at times, the Author’s age and inexperience came through. A few areas could still use a little work.
I do hope to see more from this author and truly believe that with a little more skill honing, she’ll be a force in the YA novel world!

What I Want Readers to Take Away From Something of a Kind
A Guest Post by Miranda Wheeler
Though my concepts are as elusive as the creatures that crawl around in the mythology behind Something of a Kind’s premise, some pretty vicious labors of love went into crafting what lay beyond words said. Between head-cocking themes and explicitly woven controversies, there’s quite a few things I intended readers to receive from the novel.
The story is so much more than the bursts of happiness, the capture of a rarely seen culture, intense passions, or the little whimsicalities that came into fruition from the legends within. The entities, characters, people – whatever they may be to the reader and I – deal with constant hurdles and abrasions. I asked my protagonists to bear the weight of realistic, gritty issues. The heroine swallows terminally ill and chronically absent parents and her love interest was force-fed poverty and domestic abuse at the hands of alcoholics, and between the two, trials including abandonment, grief, loss, divorce, neglect, manipulations lapsed in the void between, healing as they closed in on one another. Most of these things I’ve been a personal witness or curious student from a distance rather than a victim, but the darkest things I’ve faced in my own life definitely went into their creation. In a way, I absolutely hope that a sense of awareness for those lucky enough to avoid these experiences, and for those buried in these situations, if a sense of comfort was brought in overcoming through small victories, I’d be moved. I fought to avoid glorifying pain, or falling to the other end of the scale with overdramatizing. Much of my attention went into that effort, instead focusing on the power of conquering roadblocks and allowing those that dealt with them to grow on a separate, individual arc.
Beyond the darkness, the piece is filled to the brim with culture and a rarely touched, if not underrated, mythology. Though much of what is added is entirely fiction (The Sun Thieves is a prime example), almost everything that was included was based upon and inspired by actual legends, legitimate lifestyles, and existent areas (Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island were extremely influential muses). Comprehending a varied worldview and well-rounded global values are important elements of growing as an individual, and if some of that alternative insight could contribute to the cultivation of that development, I’d be elated, possibly over the moon.
Mostly, however, I’d love it if readers could take away an open mind, or a sense of the introduction of its culmination. My inner dreamer dragged some tremendously eccentric notions into Something of a Kind, with its associated controversies kicking and snarling by the horns in spite of whimsy’s delicate, starry-eyed nature. I had every intention of grabbing something common in reference but unconventional and bizarre in nature and dropping it into a setting where its existence was plausible and fathomable and entirely less figurative. It was the most difficult aspect of the book, and I’ve gotten some illuminating feedback on what’s said to be effective, curious, and unique. If that becomes the universal response, I can only hope it leaves the reader with a little something to holds afterwards.

Book Review/Giveaway: Shackled By Angela Carling

Wow! This is my 100th Blog Post! I can’t believe it. I’m happy that this is the post that will be cemented into my brain as lucky number 100. IF you were with me yesterday you know I was part of the Shackled Blog Tour and Angela Carling gave us a very insightful and informative post about her latest novel, and the theme surrounding it, abuse.
I'm also continuing the chance to enter to win a paperback copy of Shackled, so remember to leave a comment for your chance to win! Contest close June 27th 2012

Well today I am thrilled to be sharing with you my review of Shackled. So please, check out the cover, the blurb and my review...
After shy, quiet Lucy and her family move from their small hometown in Minnesota to Seattle, Washington, she is surprised when Ryan, the most popular boy at school asks her out. Soon, she is swept up in a whirlwind romance and her naïve and trusting nature allows her to fall head over heels in love with her too-good-to-be suitor. Suddenly, Lucy finds herself enraptured by the excitement of her new relationship, leaving her blinded to the warning signs of danger ahead. Can her fairy tale romance last, or will she find that her prince charming is more like a wolf in sheep’s clothing--Quoted from Goodreads

I loved Angela Carling's Unbreakable Love, I thought it was a sweet, sensual love story touching on the paranormal but I was blown away by her latest novel Shackled.
After reading the back cover blurb you get a small sense of what the novel is about, I knew what I was getting into, sort of, but once I read the dedication, I knew I had to sit down and read it right away.

This is a story of triumph. It tugs at your heart because sadly this subject isn’t given the attention it deserves. So often are we swept up into the fairytale romances with happy endings, of knights in armour whisking us away but the bitter truth is that this isn’t always the case. Sometimes the fairytale morphs into something unforeseen, and something that traps girls, forcing them to submit because it’s just not talked about enough.  You know what I’m going to say, and some of you are going to roll your eyes, but abuse happens. More than we realize. And some people get so far trapped, they can’t get out. I think every girl, young and old should read this novel, or one like it, to understand more about the situations of abuse and how to break free.

Shackled is a heroic tale of Lucy, whose prince charming turns into a monster. What I liked right from the start is the realistic character of Luce. So often are we forced to believe these situations only happen to the weak willed, the low self esteem--the already broken. That’s not always the case. Luce was just like any other girl, until she moved across the country, from a small sheltered town to something much bigger, daunting. But she was strong right from the start, if only she had been able to see that and hold on to it.
Instead Lucy let a charming, handsome, popular boy sweep her off her feet. And sure he was nice, there were times when I was on his side, and swooned at his attentiveness, his romantic actions, but I also saw early on the signs of his impending change that Lucy didn’t. But that’s how love works, or at least the idea of love. You are so blinded that you don’t see what’s already there.

Ryan might not have been quite the typical case for an abusive boyfriend—I don’t like spoilers, but I will say that he had a few tricks up his sleeve that many don’t. But it doesn’t matter how he took his role to the next level, whether he had help, unforeseen tactics, and a heavy fist, the result is still the same.

But even though Lucy didn’t quite see what was happening, perhaps not until she was so far gone, someone else did. Remember that, even now, you are never alone, and neither was Luce.
This story does two things, it entertains you, as a novel should, but it also teaches you, and I hope that any girl who reads this, won’t get swept up into the wrong fairytale.

With the help of some interesting characters, Ms. Carling had us guessing right until the end how this tragic case of abuse would play out. It will make you laugh, cry, and want to pound your fist into the pavement, but by far this was one of my best 2012 reads.
Even if you don’t read this novel, you think the topic of abuse is taboo, at least pay attention, not only to yourself, your relationships, but to other’s. There may be someone close to you that needs your help.

Book Review: Anew by Chelsea Fine

Wow, I’ve been so lucky to have received this book, another from the talented Author Chelsea Fine!
Check out the beautiful cover and the catchy blurb, oh, and stick around for the review!

Two years ago, Scarlet awoke in the forest alone, afraid, and unable to remember anything. Lost and confused, her life was a mystery...until she met a boy with a familiar voice.

Gabriel Archer has a voice from her past, and Scarlet's determined to remember why. She immerses herself in his life only to discover he has a brother he's kept hidden from her: Tristan Archer.

Upon meeting Tristan, Scarlet's world becomes even more muddled. While she's instinctively drawn to Gabriel, she's impossibly drawn to Tristan--and confused out of her mind. As she tries to piece together her history Scarlet realizes her past...might just be the death of her. –Quoted from

I went into this expecting a love triangle, it’s mentioned in the blurb, it’s been talked about on Twitter and Facebook... But this has got to be the most awesome, tension filled, interesting, love triangle in the world.
Scarlet wakes up in the middle of a forest, having no memories and no family, what’s a girl to do? Flash forward two years, and Scarlet is prevailing. She’s been taken in by a business savvy single woman (who I believe is not so innocent as she seems) in the town of Avalon, just a stone’s throw away from where Scarlet woke up. She’s managed to find a super fun and quirky best friend—all for Scarlet is looking up.
Of course she can’t forget or rather she can’t remember what happened to her two years ago, and the mystery is never far from her mind. But together with her best friend, Heather, she’s learning to accept what is, and move on, living life to the fullest, which includes attending the towns yearly “Kissing Festival”
Right away we can see Mrs. Fine’s flare for the fun and unique! I mean a kissing festival? Does it get more original than that? I honestly hope that somewhere in the world this sort of festival really happens. Because the idea’s surrounding it, the thought out action from Mrs. Fine and well, the sheer fun of it has me loving the story right from the start.
But Scarlet doesn’t want to kiss. Attending the festival is like pulling teeth, but when it comes to adventure, and torture she’s on board until two very strange things happen. First Scarlet sees a mysterious shadowed figure—staring at her.
Chelsea Fine pulls out all the stops here, and the writing surrounding how this stranger staring at her makes Scarlet feel is amazing. The vividness is awesome and attention grabbing.
The next thing that happens, Scarlet meets a boy... a hot one at that. The two instantly connect, but not in that really cheesy sort of way.
Thus the love triangle is in full swing, the mysterious stranger who turns out to be Gabrielle’s brother, Tristan, Scarlet and Gabrielle himself.
The entire plot is quite original, the pacing is perfect and MY GOD the cliffhanger will have you at the edge of your seat, begging for the next instalment.
This is a real winner for Chelsea Fine, it’s the perfect romantic read, with interesting twists and turns, amazing, thought out writing and totally likeable characters.
Chelsea Fine made me a fan with Sophie & Carter, but she’s made me a die-hard groupy with Anew book one in the Archers of Avalon series.
Now, if anyone of you are awesome enough to leave a comment and show this review some love, I’ve got some super cool Anew Bookmarks I’d be happy to drop in the mail for you!
